It is traditionally recited in the morning while looking at one’s palms, before getting out of bed after waking up. It is a practice of gratitude as well as mindfulness.
Meaning
Goddess Lakshmi resides on the tip of your hand
Goddess Saraswati resides in the middle of your hand
Lord Govinda resides a the base of your hand
So, one should look at their palms in the morning and recite this shloka.
Goddess Lakshmi means wealth and prosperity, Goddess Saraswati means Knowledge and wisdom and Lord Govinda means the protector. The power to create wealth, to gain knowledge, and to protect ourselves without harming anyone is within one’s own hands. With the blessing of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Lord Govinda we can start our day with complete awareness.
समुद्रवसने देवि पर्वतस्तनमण्डले।
विष्णुपत्नि नमस्तुभ्यं पादस्पर्शं क्षमस्व मे॥
Samudra-vasane devi, parvata-stana-mandale |
Vissnnu-patni namas-tubhyam, paada-sparsham kssamasva-me ||
O Goddess, who wears the oceans as clothes, and has mountains as her breast; O consort of Lord Vishnu, I bow to you. Please forgive me for touching you with my feet.
This sloka is recited upon waking up in the morning, just before the feet touch the ground. This is to show respect and gratitude to Goddess Laksmi.
