Lord Shiva – The ultimate reality of life: Chapter 7

Lord shiva as दक्षिणामूर्ति (dakshinamurthy)?

In sanskrit दक्षिणा (Dakshina) means south and मूर्ति (Murthy) means form, means is the one who is facing south. Lord dakshinamurthy is Lord Shiva as the आदिगुरु (Adi Guru) means supreme teacher. He teaches in silence to sages and rishis. The south direction is always associated with death but Lord Shiva as Lord dakshinamurthy faces to the South which represents that with spiritual knowledge we can go beyond death and maya.  Lord Dakshinamurthy teaches आत्मज्ञान (ātma-jñāna) means knowledge of the Self which is key to achieve मोक्ष (Moksha) means liberation.

Lord dakshinamurthy is shown as sitting under a banyan tree and facing south. In many pictures his right hand is in Chinmudra which symbolizes consciousness and left hand holding scriptures which symbolizes sacred knowledge. In the upper hand he holds agni which represents spiritual enlightenment. In the upper right hand he holds damaru or akshamala which is usually made from Rudraksha

The demon beneath the feet of Dakshinamurthy is known as अपस्मार (Apasmara); he represents  ignorance. Lord Dakshinamurthy presses his right foot onto the demon अपस्मार (Apasmara) which means he suppresses our ignorance and enlightens us with spiritual knowledge. In some pictures Lord Dakshinamurthy is surrounded by sages who are seeking spiritual wisdom and he teaches them with मौनं व्याख्यानं (Mauna-Vyakhyana), which means explaining through silence.
