A sense of self represents a child’s understanding of their unique identity, including their preferences, emotions, and moral judgment.
A child’s sense of self generally develops from birth through age five. As they grow, they begin to understand their own thoughts and emotions. During their first year, they try to connect with people around them and imitate them. After the first year, they start to understand emotions like happiness, anger, and sadness, slowly developing a deeper sense of self.
Cultivating a strong sense of self in children is crucial for building a healthy mind and self-esteem. It helps kids define their own identity, recognize their strengths, handle social situations without anxiety, set boundaries, and tackle challenges by finding appropriate solutions.
Kids without a strong sense of self often suffer from low self-esteem. This triggers people-pleasing and a constant need for validation. Fearing failure and lacking self-development, they let others make their choices and surrender control because they aren’t sure of what they truly think or feel.
Kids who lack a sense of self struggle to identify their own emotions, choices, desires, or opinions. These children are highly at risk of falling in with the wrong crowd; as they struggle to make independent decisions, they are always looking for external validation and fall easily to peer pressure.
Kids under seven need high supervision for both discipline and safety. This includes monitoring their digital media usage to avoid content or games that are not age-appropriate.
Kids 7-9 years often need help managing anxiety and responsibilities, such as schoolwork. They also need guidance on self-control and distinguishing right from wrong for their own well-being.
Pre-teens aged 9–12 require guidance to build independence, as hormonal changes and growing minds often create confusion. Parents should provide a safe space and support.
When parenting teenagers, parents need to be mentors as well as role models. Provide them with safety, confidence, and trust, along with emotional support. As they go through many types of changes that they sometimes do not understand, parents need to find their way to help them. This will make them feel supported, not controlled.
As a parent, how can I help my child grow a sense of self?
It is important for parents helping kids develop a strong sense of self to sometimes let them do things on their own; this helps them develop their own identity. Constantly telling them what to do can stop their ability to make their own decisions, even for small things.
Allow children to make small decisions, such as choosing their clothes, toys, or hobbies. These small acts help them encourage independence and understand choice.
Actively listen to their emotions and thoughts without quick judgment. Let them feel that you are their safe place where they can share their emotions freely. Even if they make a wrong choice, correct their mistakes without harsh comments. As parents, we need to learn to respond rather than react.
Teach your kids that mistakes are opportunities to learn; this will help build their confidence. Create a safe environment where they can learn from their errors instead of living in fear.
Provide them with opportunities to explore their passions. Assign small, age-appropriate household chores, such as helping in the kitchen or organizing their wardrobe. This shows children that their contributions matter, helping to boost their confidence and build a sense of responsibility.
Teach children to take ownership of their actions by calmly discussing the cause and effect of their behavior, which helps them find alternatives for the future.
Building a strong bond and communicating with your child is crucial for their development. Ensure you invest quality time along with financial support.
Ask children questions about how to solve problems instead of giving them the answers. This builds their problem-solving skills and keeps them calm during challenges.
Be a role model for your children; they frequently emulate their parents’ actions.
Plant Seeds of Confidence, Harvest Pillars of Strength.
