
kamdhenu (कामधेनू) is the word derived from sanskrit Kama (desire) and Dhenu (cow), she is a divine wish-fulfilling cow and mother of all cows. Kamdhenu emerged from the Samudra Manthan (समुद्र मंथन) which means churning of the Kshira Sagar (क्षीरसागर) means cosmic ocean of milk.
Iconography of kamdhenu
White celestial cow with a female human head and breasts as well as body of cow. She also has wings and a peacock’s tail. Wears crown and jewels. A cow is a symbol of purity and her female human head shows divine feminine and nurturing nature.
She is also known as Surabhi. She is a symbol of abundance, prosperity and motherhood.
Some stories say that God Indra, gifted her to Sage Vashishta. She resided with Sage Vashistha, fulfilling his ashram needs like food, milk, prosperity etc.
