What is the meaning of the Koshas in yoga philosophy?

In Sanskrit, kośa (कोश) means ‘sheath’ or ‘layer’. There are five kosha known as the Pañcakośa (पञ्चकोशाः)—the five layers that cover the Atman (आत्मन्) means the true self. The Panchakosha concept, which describes the five layers of human existence, is primarily detailed within the Taittiriya Upanishad of Hindu philosophy. The five Kosha are as follows.

अन्नमयकोश (Annamaya Kosha):

This is the first, physical or outermost layer. It literally means ‘composed of food’. Our body, which is sustained by food, consists of skin, hairs, muscles, bones, and organs—all of which need nourishment. It is the physical body through which the soul interacts with the material world.

प्राणमयकोश (Pranamaya Kosha):

The second, vital energy layers. It literally means ‘composed of life force’. It serves as the bridge between the physical form and the prana that regulates life-sustaining functions like respiration. A balanced Pranamaya Kosha brings peace and calm to the mind.

मनोमयकोश (Manomaya Kosha):

This is the third, mental layer. It literally means ‘composed of mind’. It is the place where the ego, memories, thoughts, and desires are created and stored. A balanced Manomaya Kosha separates our ego from the mind, helping us to live with mindfulness.

विज्ञानमयकोश (Vijnanamaya Kosha):

This is the fourth, knowledge layer. It literally means ‘composed of  higher intellect’. This kosha facilitates a deeper understanding of self-awareness. A balanced Vijnanamaya Kosha enhances the ability to discern truth from falsehood and strengthens intuition.

आनन्दमयकोश (Anandamaya Kosha):

This is the fifth, bliss layer. It literally means ‘composed of  bliss’. This kosha is the innermost layer of all. It is the layer where one can enjoy pure consciousness. A balanced Anandamaya Kosha gives experiences of connection with the divine.

Regular practice of this meditation helps you understand the connection between the self and the divine, which will automatically guide you to the next path.

Be calm and Know Your Pure Self.
