The iconography of Lord Dattatreya
Lord Dattatreya symbolizes the union of the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti). He is often depicted with three heads representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—who embody creation, preservation, and transformation, respectively.
The right hands hold Trishula, Japamala, and Damaru. The left hands usually hold a Sudarshana Chakra, Shankha, and Kamandalu.
Four dogs surrounding him symbolize the four Vedas—Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva—and he is often shown with a cow behind him.
Who is Lord Dattatreya?
Lord Dattatreya is regarded as the Adi Guru, or the supreme teacher.
Lord Dattatreya is a divine son born to the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya. His name signifies that he is ‘Datta’ (given) to ‘Atreya’ (the son of Atri).
