The Asta – Dikpalas (Guardians of the Eight Directions)

The Aṣṭa-Dikpālas are a group of eight celestial deities in Hindu tradition who are the guardians of the eight directions. As guardians of the universe’s eight cardinal directions, they maintain cosmic order, ensure balance, and protect against evil forces. 

The names of the Aṣṭa-Dikpālas are as follows:

Lord Indra, the king of the gods, is the guardian of the पूर्वा (Purva) meaning east direction.

Lord Varuna, the god God of celestial water, is the guardian of the पश्चिम (Pascima) meaning West direction.

Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, is the guardian of the उत्तर (Uttara) meaning North direction.

Lord Yama , the god of dharma, is the guardian of the दक्षिण (Daksina) meaning south direction.

Lord Agni, the god of cosmic fire, is the guardian of the आग्नेय (Agneya) meaning southeast direction.

Goddess Nirrti, the Goddess of death and sorrow, is the guardian of नैरृत्य (Nairṛtya) meaning southwest direction.

Lord Vayu, the lord of wind, is the guardian of  वायव्य (Vayavya) meaning northwest direction.

Lord Isana , the important form of lord Siva, is the guardian of ईशान्या (Isanya) meaning northeast direction.
